Justice for once

Looks like have at least one sane judge in Massachusetts. Yesterday, Judge Christine M. Roach released her ruling that MBTA unions could not stop the state's changes to their benefit packages which included among other things, free health care for life and the ability to retire after 23 years, and which go mostly into effect on July 1.

Roach said:

“The heated dispute about how to pay for health care has been brewing both nationally and locally for many years,’’ she wrote. “. . . Plaintiffs have waited until the very eleventh hour to seek to disrupt the new status quo by means of injunction.’’

The union's lawyer said in response to the ruling:

“To have the state, just by fiat, eliminate most of that without knowing the bargaining history and what most of those particulars are, we don’t feel is right.’’

That I don't buy. Public unions do not agree to anything that takes away something from their benefits unless they get something in return.
